The New World – #2

Fiction, Voice Week '13

Survival of the Fittest

“Sacrifice, is what makes man. Like steel or clay, a man must be shaped and formed, beaten and warped. I learned that out there, walking through the veil of burning, stale air, under the skin-crackling sun, across the water-less vast of the Arizona desert. But look at me now. This is not the land of opportunity, this is the land of the free, home of the brave; where the weak and lazy perish. The furnace is blazing, the bellows are blowing; a man must stand amid adversity and forge his own fortune.”

  1. Wow. Definitely a much more optimistic viewpoint, but that seems like an insufficient description. There is an epic quality to this piece. I love the contrast you draw between the land of opportunity and the land of the free, home of the brave, where the proactive achieve the Dream. Nicely done.
